The Munich-based digital agency schalk&friends achieved significant growth in the past calendar year: The agency, which was founded in 1999, increased its total fee revenue by 26.3% to €5.7 million, putting it in 69th place among Germany’s largest digital agencies (previous year: 75th). Particularly pleasing: schalk&friends thus grew by more than twice as much as the average of the 172 published companies (12.7%).

The reasons for this lie in numerous investments and topics that were tackled in previous years. These include

  • a high-quality range of consulting services on topics such as brand strategy and digital transformation,
  • the expansion of conception and creation with in-depth UX and creative expertise,
  • an improved technology stack that serves the needs of customers from the SME sector more precisely,
  • New, integrated cooperation models with key accounts that result in more effective collaboration
  • and, last but not least, a significant increase in the quality of the output.

“In 2018 and 2019, we tackled numerous issues that are now having an impact. The entire team has put a lot of work into making the agency more future-proof. That is now paying off.”

The growth trajectory is set to continue in terms of both quantity and quality: Matthias Bierich joined the management team in May 2020, bringing with him his many years of expertise in consulting, marketing and the creation of high-quality content. “We are thus responding to the needs of our customers for a broad, but also well-founded range of services,” says Tobias Schalkhaußer. “Even as a medium-sized agency with around 60 colleagues, we are able to meet the challenges of SMEs holistically.”

The demands placed on e-commerce are constantly increasing - not only in high-turnover B2C sectors, but also increasingly in B2B. If processes are not automated, operational limits are quickly reached when order volumes or product diversity increase. Companies of the Mittelstand in particular are realising this: Growth cannot (only) be achieved with more staff. More efficient processes, better systems and digital interfaces are also essential.

Many companies continue to use established e-commerce systems such as Magento, Oxid or Shopware 5, which have usually grown historically and are often highly customised - and this is becoming more and more of a problem. Every customised solution increases complexity and maintenance costs, and every intervention reduces adaptability.
