The Bayerische Staatsoper is one of the world’s leading opera houses and can look back on a history of opera and ballet spanning more than 350 years. With around 600,000 guests attending over 450 events every year, the opera house makes a significant contribution to Munich’s reputation as one of the major international cultural centres. Serge Dorny will take over as director of the Bayerische Staatsoper in September 2021, replacing his predecessor Nikolaus Bachler after 13 years as artistic director. With the artistic reorientation, digital communication will also be breaking new ground in future: the staatsoper.de website will undergo a comprehensive relaunch at the start of the season and will receive a new design as well as a conceptual overhaul. The Staatsoper has secured the support of its long-standing partner, the digital agency schalk&friends, as well as the design specialists at Bureau Borsche, both based in Munich.

The focus of the new website is clearly on telling the stories of the stage digitally in an emotional and socially relevant way. The concept specifically leaves room for bold designs and digital experiments, focussing on multimedia and interactive user interface elements such as notifications, audio and video players and picture-in-picture applications. In this way, the opera house wants to position itself as a digital pacesetter in the international cultural world, while also giving a central place to the customer-centred service concept: Intuitive and modern user guidance and a streamlined content concept ensure a seamless service offering and a visitor-orientated ticket service. Overall, the site should help to retain regular visitors through new formats, but also appeal to a broader and more diverse audience. The new technical basis is future-proof and designed for a large number of visitors and barrier-free accessibility.

Serge Dorny, des. Staatsintendant of the Bayerische Staatsoper: “For the development of our new website, we were looking for partners who could translate our artistic visions for the stage work of the future into the digital space. In schalk&friends and the design agency Bureau Borsche, we have found the ideal partners and are looking forward to the new launch.”

Bavarian State Opera launches season with new website

Autumn begins for the opera house under a new artistic director. The creative reorientation under Serge Dorny will also be reflected in digital communication, which is why the website will have a new design and technology from September.

The demands placed on e-commerce are constantly increasing - not only in high-turnover B2C sectors, but also increasingly in B2B. If processes are not automated, operational limits are quickly reached when order volumes or product diversity increase. Companies of the Mittelstand in particular are realising this: Growth cannot (only) be achieved with more staff. More efficient processes, better systems and digital interfaces are also essential.

Many companies continue to use established e-commerce systems such as Magento, Oxid or Shopware 5, which have usually grown historically and are often highly customised - and this is becoming more and more of a problem. Every customised solution increases complexity and maintenance costs, and every intervention reduces adaptability.
